Is it safe to apply for freebies by mail?

Beware, I did this once,never received item but received about 50 emails aday from companies wanting me to buy all sorts of rubbish. They ruined that e-mail address with spam fortunately it was my secondary e-mail address i use for general junk. so i just deleted account. Remember nothing is free in life
