Would extra horse power blow a stock auto transmission?

I want to supercharger my V6 firebird (Buick 3800). I'm not putting on the Eaton that is found on GTPs. Someone told me that since I have an auto trans, it will blow the . Is that true? How much extra horsepower can I put on the trans before it blows and what can I do to make it handle the extra power?
