Should I take my dog to the vet?

Let me start out by saying that I love my dog very much and feel terribly for the mistake I made. I was clipping him with some shears the other day when I accidentally cut part of his skin off. There wasn't any bleeding (I some loose skin that didn't have a lot of blood vessels in it), and originally the wound was rather small. But he's been licking at it, and now it's grown in size. I'm concerned about infection, because he keeps licking it. Is there reason to take him to the vet, or should I continue to let him lick it?
